It looks like David Cameron has been reading this site, he's announced a new index of well being for Britain - GWB, General Well Being as opposed to GDP. This is how The guardian reported it.
And how is this for quite an amazing quote from a Conservative Prime Minister...
"Wellbeing can't be measured by money or traded in markets. It's about the beauty of our surroundings, the quality of our culture and, above all, the strength of our relationships. Improving our society's sense of wellbeing is, I believe, the central political challenge of our times."
If he had said that as part of the election campaign he would have got my vote!
So, phase one is the introduction of the index, which will be based on quarterly questionnaires. Once we have some data and we can see trends - which will take 9 months at least - then we can start to really have a discussion about how to make Britain happier.

But isn't it easier to be
But isn't it easier to be happy in a big house in the country than in a bedsit in an inner-city area riddled with crime and drugs? Isn't it easier to be happy if you are David Cameron than if you are living on a bad estate? It's all a bit hypocritical if you ask me.
Eh, I'm really not sure what
Eh, I'm really not sure what you're driving at with your examples. It's easiest to be happy when your basic needs are met: you have adequate food, water, shelter, clothing, hygiene, community support, fertile environment, and love. What is hypocritical?
